On the occasion of the World Savings Day on 29 October 2021, Wiener Tafel took another step in the fight against food waste with the initiation of the project “Sugo with Meaning” as the newest addition to their range of “Products with Meaning”.
For two years there has been a successful cooperation between Wiener Tafel and Erste Bank, a financial service provider, which brought the “Jam with Meaning” to their branches twice as a previous World Savings Day gift to their customers. This year, weeks of preparation and action on parts of the logistics and acquisition team eager to save tomatoes from destruction led to impressive results: 43,000 glasses of delicious sugo were made from 24 tonnes of rescued tomatoes, donated by the producer cooperative LGV and the vegetable retailer Perlinger. In order to enable the transformation of the tomatoes prevented from going to landfill to shelf-stable, nutritious sugo, several companies as well as numerous Wiener Tafel employees and volunteers were involved in the production, logistics, and marketing process. In addition to the jar, leaflets containing information on Wiener Tafel’s activities, mission, and vision were handed out to raise awareness amongst the public.
The Erste Bank donates 1€ per jar to Wiener Tafel, which allows to provide around 430,000 meals for people affected by poverty. According to Alexandra Gruber, Director of Wiener Tafel, the project is “a best practice example of applied food rescue and poverty combat likewise”.
