On the occasion of its Annual Forum on Food Aid and Social Inclusion: “European Food Banks Federation: competences and creativity to feed the future“, which was held on 17 December 2020, the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) published a new report “European Food Bank: a wave of solidarity to face COVID-19″ on the challenges that Food Banks faced to address the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the ways they quickly adapted to everchanging new circumstances to ensure that those affected worst by the crisis are supported. Many Food Banks faced sudden drops or highs in surplus food, lack of volunteers and financial resources, and disruptions in their logistics due to lockdowns. However, many Food Banks managed to remain open and adapt their operations, through delivery services or other new operation models, as well as mobilizing the public support and the engagement of young volunteers.
Many motivating success stories from our members can be found in the report. FEBA offered continuous support to its members through reinforcing communication and dialogue with our members to be up to date, share challenges, and build on learnings thanks to digital tools, including three surveys and respective reports to take stock of the evolving situation. Additionally, FEBA launched an open call for solidarity and established a COVID-19 Social Emergency Fund to secure the activity of its members and ensure no good food is going to waste while helping charities to feed people in need.
