Stop Food Loss and Waste. For the people. For the planet

On 19 December 2019, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) to raise awareness on the importance of the problem and its possible solutions at all levels and to promote global efforts and collective action towards meeting SDG target 12.3.

29 September 2020 will be the first ever observance of this International. It also comes during the global COVID-19 pandemic, that has brought about a global wake-up on the need to transform and rebalance the way our food is produced and consumed.

Reducing food losses and waste is essential. Globally, around 14 percent of food produced is lost between harvest and retail. Significant quantities are also wasted in retail and at the consumption level. At the same time, millions of people cannot afford a quality meal. Food loss and waste also puts unnecessary pressure on the natural resource base and on the environment, depleting the natural resource base and generating greenhouse gases.
