On the occasion of the international day of awareness of food loss and waste on 29 September, Lithuanian food bank “Maisto bankas” together with its long-standing partners “Mantinga” went to an abandoned centenary garden where they gleaned over a tonne of delicious apples, which would have rotten in a few days.
Saved apples were peeled, sliced and cooked into a delicious apple jam by both teams. Apple jam did not only reach the people in need – schoolchildren, city leaders and passers-by were invited to the Marijampolė town square to taste the apple jam spread on substandard bread. People here tested their knowledge in a quiz on food waste and wrote down heartwarming childhood stories about bread and apples, reminding them that throwing away food also wastes important memories.
This was the first time that Lithuanian Food Bank has worked with a business company to carry out the entire food rescue process, from gleaning to production and distribution to people.
