In 2023, FareShare UK supported 8,500 charities providing food to 1.1 million people across the UK.
In mid-May, our Network Development Coordinator got a glimpse into their tremendous work during her visit to FareShare Yorkshire, The Felix Project, and the London headquarters. Spending time in warehouses and discovering the variety of products saved from becoming waste makes the impact of Food Banks tangible and thus was an important part of the programme.
The tour started in Leeds where she visited three different redistribution sides. Two of them are part of the FullCrumb Kitchen project and have in-house training kitchens where co-workers of supported community organisations are offered cooking and food safety classes to get the best out of the offered surplus products for the benefit of the people they assist. Another programme point was a stop by the social supermarket Storehouse & Field in Barnsley where member beneficiaries can choose from a variety of items provided by FareShare Yorkshire.
In London, besides meeting the team of FareShare UK and being introduced to the broad range of activities of the organisation, she visited The Felix Project and in particular Felix’s kitchen where volunteers and chefs use an average of 1,219 kg of surplus food daily to prepare over 4,000 meals delivered to local charities and schools.
