As you know our member FoodCloud has a vision of a world where no good food goes to waste, and last summer, the social enterprise launched FoodCloud Kitchen, a delicious way to protect the planet, showcasing how surplus can be transformed into spectacular dishes. The kitchen uses excess surplus ingredients to prepare a yummy food experience for the public, community organisations and corporate partners at markets, festivals and events.
In March FoodCloud Kitchen also found a regular home at the historic building Richmond Barracks, now a cultural centre for local communities. The building, which also holds the local library, creative workshops, talks and a beautiful garden focussed on biodiversity is run by the Dublin City Council Culture Company, and the partnership between them, Dublin City Council and FoodCloud is a great example of state and social enterprise working together to achieve common goals around community, inclusivity and tackling climate change.
As a project, the key objectives of the FoodCloud Kitchen are to:
- Reduce waste from hubs – where surplus is not appropriate for distribution to charities;
- Demonstrate innovative solutions to reducing food waste;
- Engage food industry partners and their employees to take action on food waste at work and at home;
- Drive greater awareness and understanding of the problem of food waste, and engage activate the public in an innovative way around positive climate action;
- Explore opportunities for FoodCloud to continue to innovate with surplus food to further reduce food waste; and
- Generate new projects to research the reduction of food waste
The FoodCloud team has already learned so much from the project, which they can share with you in the coming months.
