FEBA visits the Food Bank Macedonia in North Macedonia

During a recent visit to North Macedonia, Balázs Cseh had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the incredible work being done by the Food Bank Macedonia (FBMK). Hosted with great hospitality by Dushko Hristov, President of FBMK, the visit offered a deep insight into the organization’s operations and the crucial role it plays in addressing food insecurity in the country.

Established in 2011 by private individuals committed to introducing food banking in North Macedonia, FBMK has since grown into a vital lifeline for many struggling with food insecurity. The need for such an initiative is pressing, as North Macedonia has one of the highest shares of people facing financial difficulties. A staggering 72% of the population reports that they can manage on their household’s income only “with difficulty” or “with great difficulty.”

Sources of Food and Distribution

FBMK sources over 75% of its food from surplus donations, with additional contributions coming from corporate donors and community-led initiatives. Notably, food collections from schools and kindergartens, particularly around the World Food Day, play a significant role in supplementing FBMK’s supplies.

Through partnerships with 17 charity organizations, FBMK reaches approximately 2,500 end-beneficiaries, ensuring that surplus food is redirected to those most in need.

Strengthening Community Ties

As part of the visit, we had the opportunity to meet key stakeholders supporting FBMK’s mission. We visited two charity partner organizations—Poraka and Eco-Zivot—both of which expressed their deep appreciation for the Food Bank’s consistent and effective collaboration. Additionally, discussions with representatives from donor companies Perutnina and Min-Eks reinforced the importance of corporate engagement in tackling food waste and hunger.

Our visit also included a meeting with the mayor of Kavadarci, a municipality where FBMK has a strong presence. The local government’s recognition and support of FBMK’s initiatives further highlight the organization’s impact at both community and national levels.

A Model for Social Impact

FBMK exemplifies the power of food banking in addressing poverty and food insecurity. By rescuing surplus food and redistributing it to those in need, the organization not only provides immediate relief but also fosters a culture of social responsibility and sustainability.

The visit underscored the importance of continued collaboration among charities, businesses, and local authorities to combat hunger effectively. FBMK’s work serves as a testament to the potential of food banks in transforming lives, and I look forward to seeing their continued growth and impact in the years to come.
