Hands-on visit to FødevareBanken in Aarhus

FEBA’s Network Development Coordinator Anna Friederitz visited the Danish Food Bank member FødevareBanken in Aarhus where one of their three operation departments is located.

The day started early at the warehouse at 7:00 to practice scanning the products and pack the Food Bank’s van with plenty of nutritious food.

Then, she joined volunteer driver Niels on his redistribution tour. They stopped at six charities in and around the city, among them a support centre for children with terminal illnesses and their families, shelters for women who became victims of domestic abuse, and care homes for persons with autism. The staff of the organisations happily received a wide variety of items according to their needs, including yoghurt, canned fruits and veggies, bread, cheese, and meat – all donated surplus which now supports the most vulnerable instead of going to waste.

After this hands-on morning activity, they returned to the warehouse to meet the rest of the team and discussed many aspects of FødevareBanken’s work. Besides speaking about pressing challenges and exciting opportunities, they addressed the topic of partnerships – whether private, public or with other NGOs – as well as the ongoing work to develop IT systems meeting operational and legal needs. Further scaling up the digital infrastructure will be key to documenting and communicating the impact achieved to an even greater extent.
