Knowledge sharing and training on innovative solutions in logistics and IT to address challenges facing Food Banks today in Europe
Brussels, 22 May 2018 – The 2018 Annual Convention of the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) is organized in collaboration with the Hungarian Food Bank “Magyar Élelmiszerbank Egyesület” and takes place on 24-26 May in Budapest (Hungary).
The 2018 Annual Convention brings together more than 100 participants from 30 countries, including food bankers, policy-makers, business partners, leading experts and other NGO representatives and is focused on « Redistributing more nutritious surplus food – opportunities and challenges ».
Jacques Vandenschrik, FEBA President comments: « Food Banks address complementary needs: on the one hand, the need to avoid food waste and to recover surplus food through the supply chain; on the other hand, food assistance for charitable organizations and the most deprived. In a Circular Economy perspective Food Banks are proposing a concrete response to the prevention of surplus food becoming waste, transforming a potential missed opportunity into a contribution to improve food security. »
It is worth recalling that in 2015 42 million Europeans (Eurostat, 2016) suffered from severe material deprivation, meaning they could not afford a meal with meat, chicken, fish or vegetarian equivalent every second day. At the same time, the food supply chain looks for a comprehensive response to tackle growing resource scarcity, promoting an efficient use of those resources and bringing healthy and safe food to as many people as possible.
The 2018 Annual Convention is dedicated to knowledge sharing and training on innovative solutions in logistics and IT that will help Food Banks increase efficiency and scale operations, ultimately allowing them to recover and redistribute more food. This event is an important occasion to showcase the very best of food banking, highlighting the successes and addressing the challenges facing Food Banks today in Europe.
