On 11 February 2021, the sub-group on food donation of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste (DG Health and Food Safety) took place online.
The meeting started with an update from DG EMPL on the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) and soon after on the EU food supply and food security contingency plan by DG AGRI. Then, FEBA Secretary General – Angela Frigo – made a presentation on the stakeholders’ dialogues organised by FEBA to disseminate the EU Guidelines on Food Donation at national level as part of the pilot project “Food redistribution in the EU. Analysis of existing frameworks and dissemination opportunities” financed by DG SANTE. Angela Frigo’s contribution focused on the lessons learned and the most urgent challenges to boost food donation at national level.
In the panel “Recovery and redistribution of food during the Covid-19 pandemic” Emma Walsh from FoodCloud made a presentation on the “Lessons learned from food rescue during the pandemic” underlining the effort made by FoodCloud and in general FEBA members in Europe to cope with the challenging situation and the growing need without stopping the activities.
Last but not least, the sub-group ended with a presentation carried out by Laura Gavinelli, FEBA external consultant and management trainer, who presented the FEBA project “Quantifying the Impact of European Food Banks – from Farm to Fork” and the first release of the online Observatory on Food Donation. This is a project financed by DG SANTE which focuses on the digital transformation of the European Food Banks Federation and its members as regards data collection.
The agenda, the video recording of the meeting and all the presentations are published on the European Commission’s food waste website (please click on the link and then scroll down to find the drop-down menu ‘Meetings of the sub-group on food donation’).
