Germany: more people in need of help from Food Banks

The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically increased the number of people who seek help from Tafel Germany, according to a survey conducted among its members in March of 2021.

37 % of the 956 German Food Banks report an increase of up to 20 % of customers compared to the previous year. Among the new customers are mainly people who receive social welfare, who lost their jobs or who have to work reduced hours as well as senior citizens. At the same time, 22 % of Food Banks in Germany have fewer people coming in due to regular customers fearing an infection and staying home.

In light of these developments – increased poverty, a higher demand for help and food banks being unable to reach all of their customers – Tafel Germany calls for comprehensive government support that helps all people to navigate the crisis.
